Schools

The Royal Berkshire Archives holds the records of over 800 schools.

Some schools began as charitable foundations centuries before public education became a requirement. Others began as British or National schools under the encouragement of churches. From 1870 local authorities became involved in building and running schools.

In association with Find My Past, you can search Berkshire school admission registers 1870 to 1914 online as part of their National School Admission Registers & Log-Books 1870-1914 dataset.

You can access Find My Past onsite at the RBA free of charge through our library subscription. Just ask to book a computer when you make your booking. See our Planning a Visit page for details on how to book.

We have compiled source guides to school records for each area of Berkshire and you can view the downloads on this page. We have a comprehensive index to school records in our searchroom, so please do get in touch if your school is not listed in one of the guides.

Please note that we do not hold individual pupil records or examination results.
