It's archive activity time! Why not have a go at making this puzzle of an image of Royalty on Windsor Bridge?

Photograph of a Royal Drive, 1935 with horses and a carriage Ref. WI/AZ5/1

Taken in 1935, it shows Queen Mary accompanied by the Duke of Gloucester, third son of King George V, travelling over Windsor Bridge, followed by the Blues and Royals, a division of the Household Cavalry. The photograph was taken during King George V’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

A fitting celebratory photograph given that the bridge was officially opened 200 years ago in June 1824. Having begun construction in 1822, it was made with stone and three arches made with iron. It was was a toll bridge until 1898 and continued to be heavily used until 1970 when it was deemed unsuitable for motorised traffic. The bridge is Grade II listed and you can find out more about the listing on the Historic England website. Although motorised traffic is unable to use the bridge today, it is still regularly used by pedestrians to walk from Windsor town to Eton High Street.

The photograph is amongst others from an album dating between 1934 and 1963. You can discover more about the album's contents on our online catalogue. The album is a miscellaneous item from the large Windsor Borough collection of administrative papers held here. If you would like to find out more about the collection, you can read online descriptions in our catalogue.

This particular image was picked by one of our team as their favourite item from the archives, and you can discover more about why they chose it together with many more of our favourites in our online exhibition.
